Study in Pink vs. Study in Scarlet

Let me be honest here, I am not into books that are based on the olden times. But Study in Scarlet has kept me hanging until the end! If you didn’t know already Study in Scarlet is a book written by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. It is based on a mystery genre, and let me tell you, it definitely is mysterious. It’ll just keep you guessing and guessing every chapter.

Study in Pink is definitely the one I would prefer more that a book. But many different things happen, there are differences between the TV series and the book. Study in Pink is actually based on the book itself. The director Paul McGuigan wanted to show how England has changed since the 19th century to the 21st.

I think that it is good there are differences in London from the book to the TV series, because I would like to know how London was like back in the 19th century. What I have known was that, London used to be a very dirty place. There was definitely a huge difference on that. Now London is a clean place, It has a good environment. Back in the days, England had a huge gap between the rich and the poor. Now, England has been more developed and everybody works equally. But England has definitely been a more developed country because last time, it was not as developed.

But, why is is the TV series called “Study in Pink” and the book is called “Study in Scarlet”. Well, that is because in the TV series, the woman that was murdered was wearing all pink, there was also no blood on her. In the study in scarlet, there were blood in the surroundings of the crime scene. It was probably called study in scarlet because scarlet is a bool color.

As of the characters, their clothes has been much more different, I like that they are more fashionable in the TV series, because it really attract the viewers. If they were wearing victorian era clothes, it can be quite dull and boring. The characters also uses more modernized. In the 19th century, they would most probably wear suits and be very formal.

In the book, RACHE was meant as a german word for revenge and it was written on the wall with blood. But in the TV series, RACHE was carved on the wooden floor and Sherlock thinks that it was meant to spell the person’s name “RACHEL”. I like that instead of writing it on the wall they carved it on the wood, so that it could be more different. But also instead of a man being the victim in the TV series, it is a lady. This makes more sense to why Sherlock would think “RACHEL”.

There was definitely a lot of differences between the book and the TV series, which I really like. Because it will make the audience more interested.

Chapter 7- Light in the Darkness

Thoughts.

To start of, am I the only one in love with the title of the chapter? But, We are finally well, almost, at the end!! This is a very exciting chapter because we can finally know the conclusion and not only that. We can finally know who the actual murderer is! People think that it would be the old lady, the one where Sherlock thinks is a young boy. But I know that Sir Arthur Conan Doyle has a surprise for us… he always do. Not even surprises, maybe there would be more mystery coming up…. you’ll never know.

As I kept on reading, it turns out the writer does have more surprises! When I was in the part where the writer told us who the murderer was, I was thinking it was the young boy, but its not for some reason…..I can’t believe Sherlock solved this, like, how?! But it turns out that the cab driver was actually the murderer. I don’t know how Sherlock found out, but again, I have a lot of questions going through my mind about how he did it…. How can he solve this kind of mystery. I find it very exciting that Sherlock and Watson becomes very different from the first chapter till now.

Their attitude has changed. The way that they communicate with each other has changed. I like that Watson became more into the crime that Sherlock had to solve. Watson was first very traumatized about what happened in the Afghan War. Now, He is solving crimes with one of the best detectives in England. I liked how Sherlock and Watson has become very close together.

So that is all for Study In Scarlet, This book was definitely one of the books I wouldn’t read at first but you know, “never judge a book by its cover”. In the end, the book was very unpredictable.

Chapter 6- Tobias Gregson Shows What He Can Do

Thoughts.

I wasn’t really interested in this to be honest. I feel like there wasn’t much information on this chapter. There wasn’t much information because this is basically Tobias Gregson trying to show off his knowledge in front of Sherlock and Watson. But Watson didn’t really participate that much because maybe, he didn’t bother to know. Which has showed me the difference of Watson from the beginning of the book until now. But, I’m not going to tell you until I reach chapter 7, just to be part of the “mystery genre”. But, I think that maybe Gregson DID know when he said that he knew who the murderer was. I can’t help the fact that Sir Arthur Conan Doyle just keeps us guessing. Its hard for me to keep up with the many mystery that the author has given for us. I was confused why the writer had made the secretary Mr. Joseph Stangerson killed. What is the writer trying to do to us?? maybe not only us, Sherlock and Watson too. But, I did feel like I was there. I was solving the mysterios murder with them. But the most interesting part was when they arrested the boy, but why? maybe they were wrong right? maybe it was the person who killed Mr.Joseph Strangerson… They must’ve killed the wrong person for sure…..because why would a boy kill Mr. Drebber?

Chapter 5- Our Advertisement brings a visitor

Thoughts.

MORE MYSTERY? This chapter was an unpredictable chapter! I was surprised when the old lady that said that the ring that was found was her daughter’s ring and then. Just like that. The old lady was not who the people think she was!! How surprising was that? That part itself has made this book show how different it is from others. why? because I definitely think that no other author was would’ve think of that! don’t you think? Sir Arthur Conan Doyle is definitely one of a kind! No other author has ever made me more than interested to read a book.. But back to the old lady, how did they find out that she could be a young man? why did the man dress up as the lady in the first place? could he/she be the murderer? I can’t handle all these predictions and questions that are going through my mind. But that is the great thing about this book! it keeps the audience guessing. But the setting for this was at Sherlock’s and Watson’s home, 221b Baker Street…. trust me, Watson wasn’t the only one excited about this “mission”, I was too! Sherlock wasn’t the only curious about the old lady, I was too! This makes me feel like I was in their position, which was awesome, because I can feel the strong connection between the characters and the readers. I liked how the writer didn’t only make sherlock smart, but he also made the murderer smart. The context of this story was in the 19th Century. At that time, they would use a hansom cab to use as a public transportation. Now, you might be asking “WHAT IS A HANSOM CAB?” its a wheeled cab, but instead of using engines, they would use a horse.

Chapter 4- What John Rance had to tell

Thoughts.

This is the chapter where Sherlock explained more about the victim and about the basic details. But what excites me was that Sherlock didn’t tell Watson why he believes that that was the case. I found that this part was a bit confusing.  But I guess, we were not the only one confused. Watson was also quite confuse with the amount of mystery in this case. Which again, brought us up to the genre of this whole book. I’m very amazed with how Sir Arthur Conan Doyle has structured this. I’m usually not a big fan of reading books but this book, is a whole different story. It has the mystery, the drama, the crimes, which has made me more and more interested. I like that Chapter 4 is not suddenly a different setting, because in some books that I have read, they go straight away from one story to another. But, this chapter has really made me think, how could Sherlock know a lot about one person without even knowing them in person? Don’t you wish that you could do that yourself? because, I know I do. I honestly don’t know how Watson could keep up with Sherlock, he’s very confusing for me! The setting for this chapter would be at Rance’s home in Audley Court. They went to his place to discuss because it was him who found the body of the victim…

Chapter 3- The Lauriston Gardens Mystery

Thoughts.

I really like this chapter because I finally noticed more of the mystery genre just by the crime scene it self, because the crime part makes you wonder, why did the man write RACHE on the wall with blood? what does RACHE mean? There was a lot more questions going on in my mind. But for me, this is my favorite chapter because, this is the part where Sherlock solves crimes and for me its interesting to read about solving crimes because you never know what is going to happen next, like, who will be the murderer? what actually happened? what are the clues around us? But the thing that surprised me more was, how was the word RACHE written on the wall with blood, when there was nothing wrong with the man, there was not even a single wound. Let’s talk about RACHE…. again, a thousand questions comes through my mind about what it is. Could it be RACHEL? Could it be REVENGE (in German)? Could it be a name of a place? We’ll never know. Which, as I said before, it makes it interesting. You may be wondering, why is it interesting? Well, I like the setting of mysterious places and blood around with different types of clues to solve. I think Sir Arthur Conan Doyle wanted people to think a lot about this chapter and keep them guessing because if he did, it surely kept me guessing.

But there were finally new character! Which, I wasn’t expecting to be honest. I thought that the author just wanted Sherlock and Watson to be the only characters. The setting of the place, the wrote “It was a foggy, cloudy morning”. The place would of course be in Lauriston Garden, which is still present in London today.

Chapter 2- The Science of Deduction

Thoughts.

In my opinion, as we get on with the book, we start getting more interested and we also get more curious on what is happening next. The story is quite unpredictable. Which for me, is quite good. I was surprised when Sherlock told Watson some secrets about himself. I liked how Sherlock knew that he could trust Watson. I was more surprised when Sherlock told Watson himself, that he knew Watson’s story just by looking at his watch. Like, how can they know so much just by looking at a small thing? But this was the part that made it interesting for me. It makes you curios and it makes you want to read more. Doesn’t it?

I like the ideas that Sir Arthur Conan Doyle has put in together and make it into this one giant curious mystery that people are dying to know how. HOW DID SHERLOCK KNOW ABOUT WATSON BY JUST LOOKING AT ONE SINGLE WATCH?? But this is the part that people are going, “should i read much further to know the answer?” because that is surely what I did.

But, maybe this is why the writer wanted to write it in Watson’s perspective. Maybe the reason to that is to know that the readers aren’t the only one that felt curious about Sherlock’s life too.

I liked how in this chapter, the author wrote “As the weeks went by, my interest in him and my curiosity as to his aims in life gradually deepened and increased.”-Watson. This quote made me think about how it felt like being in Watson’s position. Why did I liked that? I liked this because I get to know how Watson was feeling too. If this wasn’t written under Watson’s perspective. I would even be reading this, I would be in utter confusion.

Overall, this chapter wasn’t the chapter that was very interesting. But, this chapter has definitely made me want to read more and more to know about how Watson deals with Sherlock’s chaos everywhere.

Chapter 1- Mr.Sherlock Holmes

Thoughts.

At first, I thought this story was a diary entry written by Sherlock Holmes himself.  As i carried on with this chapter, I was also researching about why Sir Arthur Conan Doyle decided to write about this detective called Sherlock Holmes? What I have found out during my research was that Sir Arthur Conan Doyle created Sherlock based on his professor Joseph Bell. This chapter was quite confusing for me. In the middle of the chapter, it got me more confused as before. The story was actually in Dr.Watson’s point of view. But it’s great that the author did that because now, we can get to know Sherlock more and we can also get to know him in other’s perspective. I think that it is better in Watson’s point of view because Sherlock wouldn’t describe himself right?

I think is was great that Sir Arthur Conan Doyle introduced us to London in the olden times. The story tells us that London used to be a very crowded place, a dirty place and it was also filled with many crimes. In the story, they would meet in the bar, because there would be where people meet up during the olden times in London. But at this chapter, Watson was still traumatized about what happened in the Afghan war so I really want to know wether he will change through out the chapters.

Then and Now.

What are the differences between the book and the TV show?

If you do not know already, there is also a TV show based on Sherlock Holmes. The show started in 2010, the TV series wanted to comprehend Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s book. The two main characters were played by Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman.

The difference between Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s book and Mark Gatiss’ TV series is that the show is more modernize. During the Victorian times, London (the city they played in) didn’t have much architecture or large buildings. England used to have an enormous gap between the poor and the rich. In the present, London now has many huge buildings, but also the poor and rich aren’t that different now.

English Sherlock Assesment

Our english assessment for quarter two is to create a blog on Sherlock Holmes. The assessment is not about who Sherlock Holmes is. Our blog is about our opinions on the book A Study In Scarlet. Our aim is to reflect on every chapter and also analysing it. We have to analyse the text or film and look through the character, setting, genre and context. So we are going to look around the history during the olden times or the referencing of sherlock in the tv shows. It was to show the differences between sherlock in the 19th Century and the modernize version in the 21st century.
